Hawthorn CC proudly announces its sixth Team of the Decade
The 1997/98-2006/07 Team of the Decade represents the most successful period in the Club's history in relation to overall premierships and growth. The First XI competed in three Grand Finals, all in A-Grade Turf, winning twice in 2002/03 v North Balwyn and 2005/06 v Old Carey, and were runners-up in 1998/99 to Marcellin. Each of our Team of the Decade members have played a minimum of three seasons or 30 games in the club 1st XI and all have been involved in Grand Final teams. Special mention must go to Mick Torriero, Victor Dimasi and Brad Alcock, who now feature in two consecutive Team of the Decades for the club which is an outstanding achievement and display of loyalty. Congratulations to all members of this "Special" team. |

Super Sunday 20/20 City v Country a thriller
The club's inaugural 20/20 intra-club match at Rathmines Reserve was a very colourful and hotly contested affair. The City team, draped in the tri-colour HCC training tops appeared stronger in the batting department on paper while the Country team boasted Kendall and Mac Mac to counter the strike power of Tempone and Mullen. Dean Lupton arranged a surprise Country top being the blue Dimmeys T-shirts complete with club badge and very temporary stick on numbers to create the carnival atmosphere. To cap off the uniform red pads were donned to great effect.
City were first to bat while Country performed a ritual warm-up of the drinking elbow with VBs in hand. The action was intense, no room for whimps in this format of the game. City were off to a blinder with Tempone at the helm batting with Joycey, scoring at over 10+ an over. Disappointing performers included Mullen, fresh of a Senior Turf 55, out for a Golden Globe, Trasha, boundary first ball, out the next and Dhruv Pandya also out early. Standouts for City were Craney, Naveen, Prylesy and Tempone, all being retired on 30+ while Tempers returned at the end to double up with 62 n.o. City were probably feeling quite satisfied finishing on 221 off 20.
Country, who welcomed in some talented ex players Grant Fawcett, Ed Ellis and Jeff Van Eede batted more cautiously and found themselves struggling after a strong start. Opener Ross Brown batted well for a 30 retired. Van Eede was joined by the Super Sub, Geelong boy Mick Torriero and they turned it on with some massive hitting and excellent placement. Mick made 32 retired and Knackers (The Professor) smashed 30 and was also required to walk off not out. A lighter City moment occurred when Trasha, not renown for his bowling ability, bellowed out from deep mid on, “that’s just rubbish” after a Searcy “pie” was smashed for six through square leg. Two overs later he was put back in his place, right in front of the pavilion crowd, when an easy ball passed through his legs for four!
It was getting tense for Country late in the innings after a mini batting collapse but Guru Lawson steadied the ship with a valuable 17. He was joined by Van Eede and then Brown returned after Guru was caught off Mullen. Nine wickets down, it was left to the unconquered pair to get Country home. Pandya bowled the last over and with one ball to go, scores were tied. It was run no matter what on the last ball. Contact was made and frenetic leg bye was stolen to snatch the victory for HCC Country. Man of the Match, Ross Brown for his 36 n.o. |
